Maruti Suzuki plans to build new plant in Gujarat - reports

MUMBAI (Reuters) - India's top car maker, Maruti Suzuki, is considering to build a factory in Gujarat with a production capacity of one million units, local media reported on Wednesday.
Senior management of Maruti Suzuki met with the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday and expressed interest to set up a manufacturing plant in the state with an initial investment on 60 billion rupees ($1.3 billion), the Economic Times and Business Standard newspapers said.
Maruti Suzuki could not immediately be reached for comment.
Last year, Maurti Managing Director Shinzo Nakanishi said the company was looking to advance its capacity expansion plans to meet booming demand in the fast-growing south Asian country.
The company, 54.2 percent owned by Japan 's Suzuki Motor Corp, said it was building a second unit in Haryana to add another production capability of another 250,000 vehicles a year, scheduled for completion by April 2012.
